Grading & Availability

Grading Policy:
•Tests and Quizzes:
•When a project is not given as a final assessment, a unit test may be given upon the completion of topics
•These will be multiple choice, short answer, and essay
•There will be daily quizzes based on the class information
•Exposure to Regent-type questions will be regular practice

•Homework:
•A necessary part of the course to help make concepts more permanent and enhance achievement
•Will be assigned frequently and graded upon my discretion
•_____ late assignments will be accepted (hand in the day it is due or receive a zero for that grade)
•Laboratory:
•Gives us a chance to explore biology in a hands-on environment
•Labs will be held once/week, however class time may be considered lab time upon my discretion
•All labs MUST be accepted and on file before being allowed to take the final
•Missing labs = missing final exam = repeating course
•NOTE: It is YOUR responsibility to contact me so we may schedule a time to make up a lab
•Grading Breakdown:
•Unit tests will count for ~40 points each
•Quizzes will count for ~10 points per week
•Labs will count for ~10-20 points each
•Other factors such as projects will also be included
•Your overall grade may be calculated by dividing the number of points earned by the number of possible points and multiplying by 100
•Overall grade: 50% tests & quizzes, 25% projects, 15% labs, 10% homework (percentages are approximate)

•Availability: :
•I am available in the mornings before school and during your lunch and/or study hall (depending) for extra help and/or lab make-ups. It is YOUR responsibility to schedule a time with me. I would be MORE than happy to assist you in whatever you need.

•No gathering at door, no leaving before bell
•Food & drinks:
• Not allowed any time
•if you don't have a lunch,quickly eat a snack bar before class

•Given for bathroom only, no one will go to their locker for anything

Updated Science News!

There is a link in the menu to the right labeled as "RSS Feeds & Podcasts." If you click on it and login (username: pcerny@nwcsd.org, password: student), you will have access to this week's latest science news. Once you are into the site, there are different websites you may choose from on the left menu (each site is called a "feed"). One of the folders called "Podcasts" will provide you with the ability to listen to short reports on the latest science research.

Connected for life....by ashley T:]

Their names are Abby and Brittany. They are conjoined twins, sharing the same body Abby and Brittany have their own heads and necks . They each have their own heart, brain, stomach, ribcage, small intestine, and two kidneys. They share the same body, uterus, bladder, large intestine and female parts. Abby who's head is on the left, controls the left arm and leg and Brittany who's head is located on the right, controls the right arm and leg. Each arm cant sense the others arm touch. Although doctors don't know how both arms work together whit out a thought, even though the each have control of only one arm they will automatically clap and the twins also play softball they life is different and the same as ours. How would you feel if you were in their situation? what would you do if you were in that situation? when asked "if you had the chance to be apart?" the answered " no we love being together your never alone and always have someone to talk to". do you think they would be accepted in our school? how do you think people would people would act towards them?

HIV/AIDS

Scientific research into treatments and a possible cure for AIDS is an ongoing process. Find out about the latest research into HIV and prospective cures for AIDS. Research the most recent pharmaceutical developments and other treatments. Evaluate public awareness and education programs and campaigns. How much money is being spent in any of these areas, and is it too much or not enough? Do you think HIV/AIDS has really impacted your life? How do you think your classmates would react to another student having HIV/AIDS? How would you feel?
